Even though the names of the person saying these dialogues are mentioned in short form most of you would have figured out which series I am talking about, but for sake of the remaining 1% I am talking about Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it definitely fits the name “Universe”, started with Iron Man in 2008, it spans with 25 movies so far(and counting), 12 TV series so far(and counting), excluding 6 Spiderman movies. And if we take a step back and just see the number of movies/series came from marvel there is another long list X Men series, DeadPool 1 & 2, X Men animated cartoon (and its multiple spinoffs like X Men and Wolverine), multiple Spiderman animated series, multiple Iron man animated series, and a good volume of animated movies on Avengers, and other marvel characters. Not just the humongous volume of the content given by Marvel, it has a very strong and worthy fan following as well. And it’s just marvel, if we talk about DC, we see a similar volume of content.
It all started with great comics which now has grown into such a big brand that it bags not only these many movie and series, but also has the second highest grossing movie, top movies in both IMDB & Rotten tomatoes rating. All of these have roots from comics. And I believe India do have a lot of unexplored potential in this area. Growing up I used to read a lot of comics and was fan of the Indian comic superheroes like Nagraj, Super Commando Dhruv, Parmanu to name few. These had good solo comics & crossover comics, storyline was amazing, and they were one hell of a craze. These action super heroes do have potential to be a huge success if used correctly. Obviously you can’t just take a comic and create an animated version of it and expect it to be a success, Dark Knight Trilogy is known because it was directed by Christopher Nolan, and the Marvel Universe gives it best movies because of talented people involved behind the scenes, but you can’t ignore the fact that they have been already given a good premise to build on, and that’s what I think Indian comic heroes have. I don’t claim they are bound to be great, but unless we try we can’t know and I don’t see any contents around these. There may or may not have been attempts to try them onscreen, but I don’t remember any successful ones. And as I said good execution is definitely a big factor on making these onscreen launches as hit or a lousy try, and I believe we have potential for that as well. These days we have seen a lot of good content coming in via OTT Platforms. So we have the premise and talented set of peoples who can deliver these, but this idea still remains unknown/untouched. We definitely won’t be a huge success as Marvel (at least not in any near future), but we can build on these character universe in such a way that we give this franchise a chance to evolve. In fact what surprises me most is that there is not even an animated series (even one season) exploring Nagraj, Dhruv, Parmanu where as if I search for Marvel there are many(even before the enormous success of MCU), as a matter of fact I was hooked on to marvel long before MCU started. I remember watching X Men, Iron Man & Spiderman series telecasted by Fox Kids and they were awesome. Let’s hope if we get to see Indian comic characters coming out from comics to on screen and making a fan following for themselves to become a success.
